A Doula is historically a female servent. A current labor doula serves a mother-to-be prior to, during, and after labor by providing emotional, mental, physical, and informational support about the birth process, and helps her create the birth she most desires. The doula assists the family create a birth plan, provides information about birth options and resources and provide emotional support through pregnancy. During the labor and birth, the doula facilitates communication between the family and caregivers. Postpartum, the doula assists the mother in talking about her birth experience, answers questions about newborn care and feeding within the scope of practice, and referring the family to appropriate resources as needed.

Q: Why should I get a doula?
A: Anyone who would like to be more informed about birthing procedures should have a doula. She will advocate for you during the most intense period of your life, and help you make informed decisions about the birth of your child. She will present information, provide emotional, physical, and mental support throughout your birthing process.
